A group of thugs are looking for Bill Logan, with orders to assassinate him when they find him. In a case of mistaken identity, they target a recovering alcoholic, Burt Lewis (Jack Carson), who fits the description of Bill Logan. As the story unravels, not all is what it seems, and Burt does not know whom to trust.
